Words or phrases at the same degree
Usually, cloze procedure or cloze text or fill the blank-type question asks for us to fill with word or phrase at the same degree. you can find the pattern of your text, whether it (mostly) uses present tense, present continuous tense, or past tense. The blank spot usually ask for us to fill verb(s) with the same type, especially in a sequential order.
  • Verbs are usually the same. Read the paragraphs carefully and mark the tense it uses. You will find the similarity among the verbs (whether mostly using present tense, present continuous tense, or past tense). Usually, if the text uses present tense, the V1 or V1+s/es will fit the blank spot. If the text uses past tense, the V2 will fit the blank spot and so on. Beware of the use of was, were, been that may appear such as in past continuous tense. Also beware of time signals that may appear. See the example below:
Before applying for a job, please note the following requirements: write your application letter neatly, attach your latest CV, … a copy of your ID card and a recent close-up photo, and send them to us in a well-sealed envelope.

b. enclose
c. encloses
d. enclosed
e. enclosing
  • Watch out the singular and plural form. Sometimes, you need to be careful in seeing the possibilities of your answer. Read the whole sentence where the blank spot should be filled. Both singular and plural subjects have their own “couple” verbs or auxiliaries.

Word before and after the blank spot

Word before and or after the blank spot also determines the right answer.
  • Adjective and noun. Sometimes, the blank part of your paragraph can be filled with adjective or noun.
  • Prepositions. There are many prepositions you can use (depend on the context). For example: on, in, at, around, etc.
  • Pronoun. Don’t forget, pronouns are relative pronoun, possessive pronoun, relative adverb, etc.
  • Conjunction. Every option that has the same meaning with the other options should be considered as “false”. Find out an option which is different in meaning (has no same meaning with the others).
